LONDON — The estate of J.R.R. Tolkien and Amazon Studios announced today that they have reached an agreement to adapt a newly discovered Tolkien manuscript, proving there are still a few corners of Middle-earth left for modern filmmakers to explore and multinational corporations to monetize.
The new series, Sauron, serves as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, following the Dark Lord during his formative years as an aspiring jeweler before his rise to power.
“Fans have seen Sauron forge the Rings of Power,” said Amazon Studios executive Steve Wulf. “What they haven’t seen is the years of trial and error that made him the master craftsman he became. Did you know he experimented with necklaces, anklets, and even a brooch before finally landing on rings? That’s the kind of rich lore Tolkien fans have been begging for.”
The series follows a teenage Sauron, known to friends as Lil’ Ronnie, as he struggles to impress a wood elf on whom he has developed an unhealthy fixation.
“Like many romantically challenged individuals, Lil’ Ronnie became convinced that handcrafted jewelry would solve all of his relationship problems,” Wulf explained. “Unfortunately, presenting her with a belly-button ring featuring a giant flaming eye had the opposite effect. That rejection set him down the dark path that would eventually culminate in the destruction of Middle-earth.”
Amazon described the project as “an intimate coming-of-age story about rejection, obsession, and artisanal metalworking.”
The manuscript was reportedly discovered by an assistant while relocating Tolkien estate archives. Written on a weathered notebook labeled Under No Circumstances Let This See the Light of Day After I Die – J.R.R., the work was immediately optioned by Amazon.
Executives say the studio remains committed to adapting every remaining sentence Tolkien ever wrote, including grocery lists, margin notes, and several pages believed to contain nothing but doodles of Gandalf’s hat.
